Just Hanging On, the seventh studio album from Songs From The Road Band, captures the spirit of the group and celebrates the rugged journey of life in a traveling bluegrass band. As always, the record is rooted in songs of the road, lost love, and the enduring pull of the outdoors.
“Eliza Battle” stands out as a centerpiece—a vivid historical fiction account of the steamboat that ran the Tombigbee River between Columbus, Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama, during the 1850s before being destroyed by fire on March 1, 1858. The track blends rich storytelling with the band’s signature musicianship.
The album’s lone cover, Dreams by Duane Allman, was recorded live in the studio. The performance allows each soloist room to stretch out and explore melodic ideas within the openness of an acoustic setting, highlighted by a particularly heartfelt vocal from Schimick.
The title track, “Just Hanging On,” delivers one of the album’s most powerful moments, offering an unflinching look at the realities of surviving as a working musician.
Recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios with Julian Dreyer and Charlie Chamberlain, the album reflects both the band’s growth and their deep roots in the bluegrass tradition. Alongside the core members, a talented circle of Nashville co-writers contributes to a project that feels both personal and collaborative.
For more than two decades, bluegrass hasn’t been a hobby or a nostalgia act for the band—it’s simply been a way of life. And perhaps that’s the secret to keeping a band together.
